Robe, towel or drying coat — what’s the difference?
These three terms get used interchangeably online, and they are not the same thing.

How to size a dog drying robe
Sizing by breed name is the most common mistake. Two labradors can be four inches apart along the back, and a robe that’s too short leaves the hindquarters wet — which is exactly the part that drips on your floor.
Measure two things with a soft tape while your dog is standing:
- Back length. From the base of the neck, where a collar sits, to the base of the tail. This is the measurement that matters most.
- Chest girth. The widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
If your dog falls between two sizes, size up. A robe with a little room still dries; a robe that’s too tight won’t fasten properly on a wet, wriggling dog, and won’t stay on once they shake.
Microfibre and what to look for
Microfibre is the standard for a reason: it holds several times its own weight in water and releases it again in the wash. Bamboo alternatives are softer and slower to dry themselves; cotton looks appealing but goes heavy and stays damp.
Beyond the fabric, three things separate a robe that gets used from one that lives in a cupboard:
- It fastens properly. A robe that undoes on the first shake is a towel with extra steps.
- It’s thick enough for the coat, light enough to wring. Heavy robes dry a dog well and then take two days to dry themselves.
- It’s machine washable at 30°C. Muddy walks are not an occasional event in this country.

Getting your dog used to it
Most dogs accept a robe immediately. The ones that don’t are usually reacting to being wrapped, not to the fabric.
Put it on loosely for thirty seconds while they’re dry and calm, then take it off and leave it alone. Repeat once or twice before you use it properly. Leave it on for around five minutes when they’re actually wet, then take it off before it turns damp and cold against them — a wet robe left on stops drying and starts chilling.
Washing and care
Machine wash at 30°C. Skip the fabric softener — it coats microfibre fibres and kills the absorbency, which is the entire point of the thing. Hang to dry rather than tumbling on high.
Wash it every few uses in winter. Microfibre holds mud and dog smell more than it looks like it does.
