Why Is My Dog Shedding So Much? (And What Actually Helps)

You brush the sofa, hoover the hall, and by the evening it looks like nobody did anything. Some shedding is completely normal and no brush on earth will stop it. But there is a real difference between a dog who sheds and a dog who is shedding too much — and it is worth knowing which one you have.

1. Brush more often than you think

This is not close — it is the whole answer. Loose hair is coming out today whatever you do. Brushing decides whether it comes out in your hand or onto the furniture.

Through a moult, daily. The rest of the year, two or three times a week. A deshedding brush reaches through the top coat to the soft undercoat underneath, which is the part that actually falls out — an ordinary brush only tidies the surface. For short-coated dogs, and for dogs who dislike being brushed, a grooming glove works better because to them it feels like being stroked.

Do it outside if you possibly can.

2. Bath, then dry properly

A bath loosens dead coat, and a thorough dry brings a surprising amount of it out at once. The mistake is letting them dry slowly, which leaves damp undercoat sitting against the skin. A drying robe wraps and fastens so it keeps working while you get on with something else. Once a month or so is plenty — over-bathing dries the skin and makes shedding worse.

3. Feed a decent diet

Coat quality follows nutrition. A food with named meat near the top of the ingredients and enough fat is the baseline. Some owners add an omega-3 oil and see an improvement in coat condition; ask your vet before adding supplements, particularly if your dog is on medication.

4. Fresh water, always

Dry skin sheds more. It is the least glamorous item on this list and it costs nothing.

The mistake that makes it worse

Do not shave a double-coated dog. Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Collies, Malamutes and their crosses have a coarse outer coat over a soft insulating one. That combination keeps them cool in summer as well as warm in winter, and it protects the skin from sunburn.

Shave it and it often grows back patchy and different in texture — sometimes permanently. It does not reduce shedding either; it just makes the hairs shorter and harder to pick up. If your dog is hot, the answer is shade, water and walking early, not clippers.

You are not trying to stop the hair coming out. You are choosing where it lands.

Why is my dog shedding so much all of a sudden? Usually the season turning, or stress a week or two ago. If it came with itching, bald patches or sore skin, see a vet instead of waiting.

Do dogs shed more indoors? Yes, in a sense. Central heating and artificial light blur the seasonal cue, so instead of two big moults you get a steady trickle all year.

Is there a food that stops shedding? No. A good diet keeps a coat healthy, and a healthy coat sheds less than a poor one, but nothing stops a moult. Be wary of anything advertised as doing so.

My puppy has started shedding heavily. Puppy coat is replaced by adult coat somewhere between four and twelve months. It is messy, it is normal, and it passes.
