The reason most owners avoid trimming nails is the quick — the blood vessel inside the nail. Cut it and it hurts and bleeds. These dog nail clippers have an LED in the head that lights the nail from behind so you can see where the quick ends.

What the light actually does

Held against a nail, the LED makes the nail glow. The darker shadow running up the middle is the quick. You cut in front of it. On black nails, where you cannot see the quick at all in normal light, this is the difference between guessing and knowing.

How to trim safely

Take a little at a time — several small cuts beat one big one. Stop as soon as you see a pale oval appear in the cut end, that is the quick getting close. Keep styptic powder nearby the first few times.

How often

Roughly every three to four weeks. If you can hear nails clicking on a hard floor, they are already too long.
