How to fit your dog seat belt

Push the metal tongue into the seatbelt buckle until it clicks. Clip the other end to the back ring of the harness. Set the length shorter than feels necessary: a tether that is too long lets a dog build momentum before it goes tight, which defeats the point.

Which dogs is it for?

⚠ Always clip to a harness, never a collar.
In a sudden stop a collar concentrates the entire stopping force on your dog’s neck. A harness spreads it across the chest and shoulders. If your dog only wears a collar, add a car harness before using any tether.

Care and storage

Wipe the webbing with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally. Avoid tumble dryers and radiators, as heat weakens webbing. Check the clip and stitching every few months and replace the tether if you see fraying or a bent clip.

Sizing and compatibility

This dog seat belt fits every car sold in the UK, because seatbelt buckle dimensions are standardised. It suits small and medium dogs comfortably, and works with any harness that has a back or chest attachment ring. If your harness only has a front ring, the tether will still clip on, but your dog will turn side-on in a stop, so a back-ring harness is preferable.

Length is adjustable. As a rule, set it so your dog can lie down flat but cannot get their shoulders past the gap between the front seats. On a rear bench that is usually around the midpoint of the adjustment range.

Common questions

Can I use two on one bench? Yes. Most cars have three rear buckles, so two dogs can be tethered independently. Keep the straps short enough that they cannot tangle with each other.

Does it work in the boot? Only if your boot has anchor points and you use a boot-specific tether. A dog seat belt is designed for a seat buckle. For boot travel, use a boot liner with a boot guard or a crate.

Will it damage the seats? No. The webbing is soft and the clip sits away from upholstery. If your dog is a heavy shedder, a seat cover will save more cleaning than the tether will ever cost you.

How long does it last? Years, with sensible care. Replace it if the webbing frays, the stitching pulls, or the clip stops closing cleanly. It is a safety item, so retire it early rather than late.
