Licking is self-soothing for dogs. It lowers the heart rate and settles them, which is why a dog lick mat is the standard trick for nail trims, bath time, thunderstorms and vet visits. Spread something soft across the grooves and your dog has a job to do.

The suction base matters more than the pattern

Most cheap mats slide around or get picked up and carried off. This one has a lick mat with suction cups on the back that grip tile, glass and the side of a bath, so your dog has to lick rather than lift.

What to put on it

• Wet dog food, or a spoon of plain yoghurt
• Peanut butter — check the label says no xylitol, which is toxic to dogs
• Mashed banana, pumpkin puree, or bone broth
• Freeze it for 30 minutes to make the session last two or three times longer

Cleaning

Food-grade silicone, so it goes in the dishwasher or rinses under a hot tap. Get into the grooves with a brush if you use anything sticky.

How long to leave it

Ten to twenty minutes is plenty. It is an activity, not a feeding bowl — count whatever you spread on it as part of the day’s food.

Rinse in warm soapy water and dry before your dog’s first meal. If your dog has only ever eaten from a flat bowl, put a smaller portion in for the first few days — the point is to slow them down, not to frustrate them.
