That is the whole difference. A towel needs a hand holding it. A robe does not.

Dry robe, drying coat or dressing gown — what is it called?

All the same thing, and nobody agrees. You will see this product sold as a
dog dry robe, a dog drying coat, a
dog towel robe, or a dog dressing gown. Some people just
say dog robe.

They all describe an absorbent wrap that fastens around a wet dog. The only meaningful
differences between them are the material, whether it actually fastens, and how much water
it holds. Names are marketing. Absorbency is not.

Why microfibre rather than cotton

Microfibre holds several times its own weight in water. That is why it takes a coat from
dripping to damp in a couple of minutes, while a cotton bath towel mostly moves water around
and then gets heavy.

This one is thick enough for a double coat and still light enough to wring out and hang
over a radiator. For heavy shedders it does a second job too — a good rub with the

Getting the size right

Measure along your dog’s back, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. That
length is what the sizing is based on, not weight — two dogs of the same weight can be
completely different shapes.

If your dog is between sizes, go up. A robe that is slightly long still fastens and still
dries; one that is short leaves the back legs wet, which is exactly where the mud is.

Using it

1. Wrap it over the back, bring it under the chest and fasten.
2. Firm rub along the back and down each leg — ten seconds is enough.
3. Leave it on. It keeps drawing water out while your dog settles.

Most owners keep it in the car and put it on before the drive home, which saves the seats
as well as the dog. If your dog travels on the back seat, a
dog car hammock underneath it catches whatever the
robe misses.

Washing it

Machine wash at 30°C and hang to dry. No fabric softener — it
coats the fibres and destroys the absorbency, which is the one thing you are paying for.
Never tumble dry.

What it will not do

It is not a waterproof coat. This is for drying a wet dog, not keeping a dry one dry in
the rain — different fabric, different job.

It will not get a thick double coat bone dry on its own. It takes a heavy coat from
soaking to damp very quickly, and then air does the rest. Anyone claiming otherwise about
any robe is overselling it.

And it is not a substitute for a proper brush-out. If your dog is muddy rather than wet,
let it dry and brush it — rubbing mud into a coat with a towel makes matting worse.

What size dog robe do I need?

Measure along your dog’s back, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and match that length to the size guide. If your dog falls between two sizes, go up — a robe that is slightly long still fastens and still dries, while one that is short leaves the back legs wet.

Will it dry a thick double coat?

It will take a double coat from soaking to damp in a few minutes, and then air does the rest. No robe gets a thick double coat bone dry on its own, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. For heavy coats, leave it on for fifteen to twenty minutes rather than expecting an instant result.

Is a dog robe the same as a Dryrobe?

Same idea, different brand. Dryrobe is a specific company, and their name has become shorthand the way Hoover did for vacuum cleaners. You will see this product sold as a dog dry robe, a drying coat, a towel robe or a dog dressing gown. What matters is the material and whether it actually fastens, not the name on the label.

Can I tumble dry it?

No. Machine wash at 30°C and hang it to dry. Heat damages microfibre and ruins the absorbency, which is the only thing you are paying for. Do not use fabric softener either — it coats the fibres and has the same effect.

Does it work on a muddy dog, or only a wet one?

Wet, mainly. If your dog is muddy rather than just wet, let the mud dry and brush it out instead. Rubbing wet mud into a coat with any towel or robe works it deeper into the fur and makes matting worse.

Do I need one if I already have towels?

For a light drizzle, honestly no — an old bath towel is fine. The difference shows up with a genuinely soaked dog, because a robe fastens and keeps working hands-free while you deal with your own coat, the lead and the car. If your dog swims or you walk in real weather, that is what you are buying.
